Most people know (more or less) who they are. Your clothes, friends, possessions and all that you surround yourself with are extensions of your identity. A company also as an individual entity has it’s own identity which is communicated through visuals and symbolic meaning.
The Corporate Identity is the feel and look of a company, it is the visual experience, the recognisable cover to the book. It can change over time to suit trends or to complement the market and appeals direct to consumers on a personal level.
Whilst the brand itself is emotional and has no physical properties it is implied and communicated via the corporate identity. The most basic element of the corporate identity is your logo but a full corporate identity includes the design of all your online and any printed material. For larger businesses you may also want a guideline document outlining all the appropriate company colours, fonts and layouts to use in any situation.
The best analogy perhaps is to think of the brand as a person and the corporate Identity as their outwards appearance. The characteristics, reputations etc. of the individual been somewhat fixed yet if they cut their hair in a certain way or dress differently then old dears greet them with smiles rather than frowns and people who would otherwise cross the road to avoid them would stop to say hello.
